Signe Wennberg Merritt

Signe Wennberg Merritt BA, MA

Signe is a highly qualified and experienced educator, having worked in both private and public schools for over 30 years. She has direct experience teaching K-12 curricula across the disciplines. She possesses exceptional ability to establish rapport with students, colleagues and families and to build positive, collaborative relationships. As a flexible and adaptable thinker, she is able to create and deliver unique, individualized strategies and solutions leading to social/emotional growth and academic success. Her students, families and colleagues rely on her ability to  represent needs and concerns, and effectively articulate  these to a broader audience. As a change agent committed to the needs of learning- different individuals, she has worked arduously to promote opportunities for individuals to "show what they know" and reach their potential.  Signe is at heart a coach, both on and off the field. She has coached field hockey and tennis at the high school level, and boys and girls soccer for Parks and Recreation. During the summers she has worked as Sports Director and subsequently Director of Camp Compo. Although she does not currently ride, she volunteers in a Therapeutic Riding Program where she combines her love of horses with helping others to discover an avenue for pleasure and success.

Signe has extended her knowledge and expertise as a leader in the past , as former NYC Director of Very Special Arts (sister organization to Special Olympics) and Director of the Rubino Center, a Birth to Five Program for children with special needs. She has been asked to serve on district committees reviewing current practices and recommending change. She was selected to represent special education on the district negotiating team in the past two negotiations. She was also chosen to represent special education concerns at the state level . An optimist by choice, fueled with energy and enthusiasm, she looks forward to new opportunities for learning and growth. People have said that she has a unique ability to understand, provide guidance and motivation,  and partner with students to build confidence and success. In her spare time, Signe can be found in her vegetable and flower garden, hiking, or in the kitchen cooking and baking (a very weighty pastime). She counts herself fortunate to have continued contact and close relationships with former students; as a matter of fact, she is currently teaching former students how to cook and manage their household.
